El Dr. Juan Escrig participó en la V Conferencia Internacional de Jóvenes Científicos y la Reunión General Anual de la Academia Mundial Joven, realizada entre el 25 y 29 de mayo, en Montebello, Canadá. En la oportunidad el académico convocó a sus pares a utilizar todos los medios de comunicación disponibles para difundir sus estudios ante la opinión pública en general y sus pares en particular. Esta instancia reúne a científicos de todo el mundo, quienes son elegidos por su demostrada excelencia en logros científicos y su vocación de servicio. Actualmente hay 200 miembros de 58 países.

Dr Juan Escrig participated in the Fifth International Conference for Young Scientists and the Annual General Meeting of the Global Young Academy, held between May 25thand 29th, in Montebello, Canada. On the occasion, professor Escrig encouraged his peers to use all available means to disseminate their work among general public and other scientists. This conference gathers scientists from around the world, who are selected for the excellence of their science and their commitment to service. Currently, it has 200 members from 58 countries.

Medir las emisiones contaminantes a una altura de 1.500 metros y conocer cómo varían las concentraciones en altura, dependiendo de factores como el día, la hora, la humedad y la temperatura, es el objetivo del proyecto que lidera el Dr. Ernesto Gramsch (en la fotografía), académico del departamento de Física de nuestra Universidad. Para ello se utiliza un drone, vehículo aéreo no tripulado que carga todos los instrumentos necesarios, para obtener datos específicos de este relevante tema para la salud de los residentes en la Región Metropolitana.

 Monitoring contaminating emissions at a height of 1,500 meters and understanding how contaminant concentrations vary at height depending on factors like the day, the time, humidity and temperature: this was the objective of the project led by Dr Ernesto Gramsch, professor at the Department of Physics at Universidad de Santiago. For this purpose, he is using a drone, an unmanned aerial vehicle that carries all the necessary instruments to collect specific data regarding this problem that affects the health of people living in the Metropolitan Region.

El especialista en geofísica y geología, Alonso Arellano explica que por el tipo de lava, los eventuales próximos episodios no deberían ser catastróficos y se puede esperar que "las  erupciones sean un poco más intensas y que duren semanas o meses".
Adelantó que, como en otras ocasiones, la mayor parte de la columna de gases pasará a territorio argentino.

Alonso Arellano, an expert in geophysics and geology, explains that, due to the type of lava, the potential following events should not be catastrophic. “We may expect stronger eruptions to last for weeks or months.” 
He says that most of the gas column will pass to the Argentinean territory, just like on other occasions.
“The alert actions taken for warning people have been adequate,” he says. He suggests people to be alert, because “there is always the possibility of fissures in the volcanic cone and lava could flow in other directions.”

Académicos del Departamento de Física, liderados por el Dr. Raúl Cordero,  formaron parte de la expedición científica realizada en noviembre por el Instituto Antártico Chileno (INACH) al “Glaciar Unión”, aportando valiosas mediciones sobre las propiedades ópticas de la nieve.

Academics at the Department of Physics, led by Dr. Raúl Cordero, were part of the scientific expedition made in November by the Chilean Antarctic Institute to Unión Glacier and they contributed with valuable measurements of the optical properties of snow. 

En el marco de la 226ª reunión de la Electrochemical Society, ECS, el investigador de nuestra Universidad recibió el reconocimiento Fellow Class 2014,  por su contribución al progreso de la ciencia, la tecnología, el liderazgo en la disciplina y por su activa participación en la Sociedad de Electroquímica, convirtiéndose en el primer investigador activo en un país latinoamericano, que recibe esta distinción.

During the 226th meeting of the Electrochemical Society (ECS), the researcher at Universidad de Santiago was appointed Fellow of the 2014 ECS Class for his contribution to the progress of science and technology, his leadership in this discipline and his active membership in the ECS. He became the first active researcher in a Latin American country to be awarded this honor.
